The concept of being masculine is tied in with male physical attributes such as broad shoulders, huge and strong biceps, 6-packed abs and a well-shaped chest. But what if a pair of fleshy and saggy breast is growing instead of a manly chest? Men with this condition ( also known as ” Gynecomastia“) suffer from the embarrassment of being unable to go topless in the beach, feeling awkward of taking off their shirt the pool or wearing a snug-fitting shirt, being ashamed of showering in public toilets after playing sports and being teased by their partners.
What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is referred to as the enlargement of the male breast tissue. Usually, the diagnosis can be made by a well-experienced surgeon where relatively firm tissue or breast gland tissue can be differentiated from relatively soft tissue or adipose tissue.
What Causes Gynecomastia?
This condition is usually caused by an imbalance of hormones during adolescent years which fail to resolve as the teenage boy grows into adulthood. Also, over-developed or enlarged breasts may occur as the result of hereditary conditions.
Certain hormonal conditions can be due to taking certain medications that influence the body’s hormonal level. Also, it can occur if someone is suffering from a testicular tumor, which can cause estrogen ( female hormone) production to significantly increase.
What are the Treatments for Gynecomastia?
If you think that you feel less than a real man because of Gynecomastia, then why don’t you move and start by having it checked by your medical doctor or an endocrinologist. This condition will not hurt you but will embarrass you.
Gynecomastia can be treated by a variety of plastic surgical techniques:
- It is often best treated with partial excision of the prominent glandular tissue.
- Liposuction surgery of the peripheral chest area.
- Liposculpture surgery for prominent chest wall caused by adipose tissue.
- It is an outpatient procedure that can be done under local or general anesthesia.
- The procedure takes 1 to 2 hours to complete
- The cost of surgery for Gynecomastia would usually range between P70, 000 to P90, 000
The preferred correction depends on the size and quality of the breast skin. If the skin is youthful and has good skin tone then liposuction will almost always show a good result.
Men with larger breasts may need more than liposuction to remove excess fat, breast tissue, and skin. Usually, staged procedures (more than one procedure) is required. Like for instance, the first procedure may be liposuction, then several weeks to months later after skin contraction has occurred, a breast tissue excision is done to remove excess skin.
Most men can resume full activity after two weeks, when the sutures have been removed. Sutures are typically removed within 7 to 10 days of surgery.
Elastic garment is usually worn to minimize swelling and help skin to contract for a 3-6 weeks following surgery. For those men who need open surgery (liposuction plus excision) will have scars on the chest, which will remain pink for months before finally fading.
Consult with a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss your concerns and learn about the risks and benefits of the recommended treatment. Good luck!
